tHE JOINT BOOK
The mortise-and-tenon joint has been used since ancient times; however, in extreme weathers, wood movement becomes a danger to the joinery. The JOINT book introduces a way of eliminating the concern on the cell structure of wood. The 3D-printed wood joint makes up the “covers” of a book. While the veneer gives the joint its diversity of color and texture, the grid structure inside the printed form mimics the physical properties of stiffness and strength of a real piece of wood.

The JOINT book includes different forms of mortise-and-tenon joints that can be produced in wood by a 3D printer. Despite its traditional links with the antiquity of woodworking techniques, the JOINT book expands the possibility of wood with a modern method.
The JOINT Book is being showcased in the SAIC Object Lessons: Book Explorations group exhibition in Chicago.
