About
Yi-Ollie Lin is an independent designer based in London, UK and Shanghai, China. Her design practice integrates experimental methods and craftsmanship, such as 3D printing and traditional woodworking, to produce objects and furniture.
Designing books as objects using materials other than paper leads her into the field of product design. She works in-between the two and the three dimensions that cross multiple fields, including ceramics, paper, wood, and metal.
She studies Designed Objects in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Rhode Island School of Design. Her works have been collected and presented by the Joan Flasch Artist’s Book Collection in Chicago. Her interest in applying design to areas such as the conventional bookbinding industry leads her to explore more innovative approaches to the production of books and other objects.
The most important thing as a designer is not to let the users understand “how-to” at first sight, but to create a mentality for them that they want to explore and solve the enigma.
Hiding leads to exploring.
A fun relationship is thus created between me as the designer and the users of my products. There are the designs that “serve” as objects and the designs that “serve” as relationships. With products designed to raise curiosity, I would like to consider myself as a designer designing for the latter.
