MELT

The MELT project is an exploration on ways to rethink the design process of a piece of furniture, and how can a piece of furniture stimulate people’s desire to play. Children do not need to be told how to play with a toy. They seem to acquired the knowledge on how to play since birth. However, when adults are given an object without any clear purpose or function, they thrive to dig out its nonexistent meaning or value. MELT is such a piece of furniture that is ambiguous but omnipotent in function and form.

MELT’s form is mimicking a pile of melting  snow. As a child, a pile of snow can be the source of fun and happiness for the entire day. MELT is designed to bring back such simple enjoyment of able to dive in and have fun. 

As the designer of this “playing field,” I long for the users to play with it like a child. So adults do not have to freeze and ask “how” when they are told to “play."
